Chapter 12

Marty got a call from Steven Chen with an offer to let the agency handle the redesign of Yuan & Associates’ client services brochure. If Double D delivered the exceptional work they promised, additional assignments would be forthcoming. The news meant a great deal to everyone, especially Marty, who finally realized his heroic efforts had saved the day.

“I wrote three new Chapters of Persuading Pete last night,” he said proudly as he stood in Harper’s doorway.

“Wow. You must’ve had quite the productive streak.”

“Let’s just say I found new inspiration.” He pounded his chest. “Right here.”

“Good for you. I’m happy to hear that,” she said, taking the sheaf of yellow loose leaf paper from his hand.

“Oh, yeah, I also have another assignment for you,” he said, swiveling gleefully on the balls of his feet. “I want you to start working on my acceptance speech for the Aggies next week.”

“The Aggies? Of course, I can. But don’t you want to write it yourself?”

“I’m no Winsome Churchill. You know how to make me sound good, so just put something together and I’ll add my own spin to it.”

“Sure thing. I’d be honored.”

“Thanks. I appreciate it,” Marty said.

“Well, thank you for saying thanks.” Harper nodded approvingly, impressed by the uncharacteristic flicker of gratitude. “And, uh, speaking of the Aggies, you really haven’t mentioned who’s going to go yet.”

He bowed his head to avert his eyes.

“Marty? Aren’t we buying a table?”

“At fifteen hun a pop? Nooo, I’m afraid not,” he said. “Sematek has some seats available but only enough for a few of us.”

She quickly grew suspicious. “A few of us? And by that you mean?”

“I’m sorry, Harpie. I’m going, Nat’s going, and–”

“No! Don’t say it!” Tears pricked at the corners of her eyes. “Don’t you dare say it.”

He shrugged. “She’s an account rep. She has to be there to network.”

“But Sharlene doesn’t handle the Sematek account. In fact, she’d barely even started here when we worked on the Can’t Wait campaign. Worked our asses off, might I add.”

“Believe me, I feel shitty about it. I wish we could all go, but we can’t afford to send anyone but the executive team.”

“Jules told me that Bennett-Clark invited their entire staff plus a huge guest list. They have three entire tables reserved.”

“Please don’t start in with that Bennett-Clark crap.”

“Unfortunately, I feel like I have to remind you time and again of how other agencies treat their people.”

“When we have Bennett-Clark’s bankroll, we can throw around money like fucking Bennett-Clark!” Marty got in the last word before leaving her to stew. Just another fallen petal off the I Hate Him, I Hate Him Not daisy chain that their relationship had become.

She sat down at her computer and opened up a new document file. Her angry fingers pecked hard at the keys:
